About Me

Teaching Philosophy

All students can understand math, given the patience and dedication to really getting beneath the concepts that puzzle them.

When struggling students come to me, they may think they don't like math or aren't good at it, because they never had anyone take the time and focus to help them take the mystery out of concrete pieces that become the building blocks for confidence and enjoyment of math.

When advanced students come to me, they are excited to be encouraged by someone who partners with them with a shared enthusiasm for advanced concepts.

Student Testimonials

Whether it's the advanced student who picks math up quickly and wants to be challenged, or the struggling student who needs extra care, I often get top reviews about my teaching style. Often students tell me they finally understanding material they couldn't understand before.

I also receive the great compliments from parents of my students with ADHD, neuro-diverse learners, and learners on the spectrum.

Versatile Career Background

I have taught many subjects from math to business, to chemistry to social studies, current events, and ESA. In the past decade, I have focused my energies on math because focus on one topic makes me deeply capable of helping even the most advanced students, and because I'm determined to help put American math education of our teens into the top tier performance in the world.

How did I accomplish having such a broad and deep experience in teaching? Easy! I've had a versatile career with deep experiences in both STEM and liberal arts, starting with terrific educations at two top universities. Here is a list of my experiences of interest:

  • BS in Chemical Engineering at University of Virginia with my senior project being the development of a computer simulation of a chemical reactor.
  • Chemical Engineer for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Research Headquarters.
  • Masters in Business Administration from Case Western Reserve University (top-tier MBA program) with a specialization in Human Labor Relations.
  • Senior Manager at Ernst & Young LLP's Management Consulting business.
  • Developed and taught consulting methodology training seminars to hundreds of incoming college grads who were starting their careers at Ernst & Young's Management Consulting Group.
  • Homeschool parent to four students who all received top merit scholarships and landed in great software engineering careers.
  • Founder of A Widow's Might, a national ministry for widows, helping widows with the emotional and spiritual needs after loss. Grew the ministry from just a couple of us writers to a team of dozens decades later, reaching tens of thousands of widows across the world and organizing events to help them.
  • Published several books that support the ministry and high school education.

A few scenarios to show my teaching style

In 3 different sections of my pre-calculus class, I had two different personality types that predominated the groups. In the first group I had many artists. They were convinced they hated math. My focus in that section was to help them uncover that they were actually good at it, and who knows what purpose that skill might serve in the business or technology world of art. In a second class, I had many very strong students that were up for challenges and wanted to be engineers. They were excited to find a group they could explore even beyond the normal precal curriculum. And in a third class I had a mix of personalities. I found the strong students helped support the ones that were so confident and they learned the appreciation for helping others uncover their love of math.

For Parents Wanting to Motivate Their Learners Toward College and Real-World Applications

My four homeschooled children learned so well that they have all placed into top universities with all of them receiving full or nearly full merit scholarships. Even my one son with learning disabilities. They accomplished this by solid learning, but also through strong SAT scores. I worked with each of my students on targeted SAT prep. As a result, their scores improved up to 300 points!

I share these successes with you because I want you, a parent, to know that it can be done. I know how to fire up students so that they want to learn enough to master each topic!

For Learners Who Want to Know About My Online Teaching Experience

Most of the classes I offer here at Outschool have been tried and tested and well-established for years with my students. I have also taught online English as a Second Language for two years and hold the highest ratings available. I teach seven different levels and have a strong base of students that I have come to know and love. I am at ease in an online environment and I know how to help your learner feel comfortable too! The most common comment in my class is my energy level and excitement I build in the lesson.
